The 2017 Ford Bronco’s sleek external design would be incomplete without a selection of fascinating colors, and fortunately, Ford has provided 11 excellent options. While Ford’s marketing labels it marine-grade vinyl, the vinyl used on boats primarily has to worry about weather resistance. The materials designer at Ford had to make certain adjustments so that the cars could withstand being handled frequently and the weather. A 12-inch touchscreen runs the Ford SYNC 4 infotainment system in the middle of the dashboard. The Bronco Raptor-specific Performance View for the 12-inch all-digital gauge cluster focuses on the tachometer and gear readings.
After spending over 10 hours in them throughout two days of driving and commuting, we can attest that the new Raptor-specific seats are rather pleasant. We weren’t flung around as much as we might have thought at first glance, so the bolstering could be more robust. However, the seats were the source of much consternation. Considering that this truck was built to spend days in the desert, the lack of air-conditioned seats came as quite a surprise. They are easily cleaned as-is, and the perforations in the seats would get clogged with muck, but this isn’t a mud-crawler. The inside of the car was a delight to spend time in, providing a relaxing and aesthetically pleasing environment for the driver. Once you turn your head away from the rearview mirror, visibility is excellent, but because the roof can be removed, a third brake light must be installed over the spare tire. Carpet flooring replaces the standard rubberized washout flooring. Interior options include laser-perforated Black Onyx Neo suede seating, a vinyl-wrapped instrument panel topper, leather-wrapped outer seat bolsters, and more. The B&O 10-speaker audio system is an excellent addition.
With a total of seven, the Bronco Raptor has its unique feature. The Bronco Raptor is powered by the tried-and-true 3.0L EcoBoost V6 engine with twin turbochargers, which has been fine-tuned for this SUV to produce 418 horses and 448 lb-ft of torque. A 10-speed SelectShift transmission is in charge of directing the power, and it may be set for two-wheel drive high, four-wheel drive high, or four-wheel movement low. The Bronco can not only carry 4,500 pounds in comfort, but it can also pull asses across rugged terrain or creep slowly over significant impediments. The Goes Over Any Terrain (GOAT) settings are what most users care about. Baja mode incorporates an anti-lag calibration borrowed from the GT supercar’s turbos for maximum output on high-speed runs. Selectable exhaust settings include “Normal,” “Sport,” “Quiet,” and “Baja,” the last of which displays a harsh warning that it is inappropriate for street use. That setting may just as quickly be termed the Maximum Volume setting.
The following morning, we arranged to meet at Johnson Valley, and I must stress that the area is no laughing matter. Especially during the warmer months. The scorching heat would test the cooling system; the suspension by the rock-strewn roads; the tires and all-wheel-drive system by the sand and silt; and our sphincters by the steep downhill sections. Ford was now releasing the press corps inside the vehicle, and their off-road experience varied widely.
