In the 2024 small pickup truck market, the Hyundai Santa Cruz Crew Cab and the Ford Maverick SuperCrew are the two main competitors. There are three trim levels available, with prices ranging from the starting MSRP of $21,490 for the basic XL to a high of $27,355 for the top Lariat. The new Maverick offers a hybrid as the base engine option, with a V8 as an upgrade. Only at 4,000 rpm does the four-cylinder engine reach its maximum torque. This model comes standard with a CVT and is pretty refined and subtle. Purists may mock the Maverick since it’s a hybrid truck with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), but it’s a champ in the city. When gently pressed, the accelerator will move off the line without using the gas engine. It’s a peaceful sensation.
The 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine is the best choice for those who prefer brisk acceleration or all-wheel drive availability. It generates 252 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. There’s a lot more pep in the acceleration, and it’s teamed with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The eight-speed operates without hiccups, and the gear changes come at the precise moment that acceleration is required. The EcoBoost is noticeably faster than the alternative, but it makes a harsh noise when driven quickly, while the hybrid engine is noticeably quieter and more at ease.

The standard XL with the hybrid drivetrain costs about $19,995 (not including the destination fee of $1,495). The cost rises by $1,085 with the 2.0-liter EcoBoost motor and $3,305 with both AWD and the EcoBoost motor. Adding the EcoBoost engine or EcoBoost with an all-wheel drive will cost the same extra as the XL. A well-equipped Lariat can be purchased for $25,490, while the more affordable XLT can be bought for $22,280.
