Ford F-150 EV Lightning 2024 Models, Engine, Release Date

Posted on September 10, 2022

Ford F-150 EV Lightning 2024 Models, Engine, Release Date – Ford, has released the F-150 Lightning, an all-electric pickup truck representing the company’s most ambitious invention since the Model T. The Lightning is based on the same platform as the standard F-150, but it is powered by electric motors and one of two battery packs instead of a gasoline V-6 or V-8. According to the manufacturer’s specifications, the Standard-Range battery can travel up to 230 miles on a single charge, while the Extended-Range storm can travel up to 320 miles. Several other electric pickup trucks have also debuted this year, including the GMC Hummer EV SUT and the Rivian R1T. However, neither of those trucks has the prestige of the F-150 behind it, and the base price of America’s favorite truck, the F-150 Electric, is far lower than that of any of its competitors.

No matter what powertrain is (or isn’t) available, the 2024 Ford F-150 Lightning is an excellent pickup truck. The Lightning has a powerful all-electric motor that allows instantaneous acceleration, up to 320 miles per charge range, and a towing capacity of 10,000 pounds. It has plenty of room for passengers and goods, and the ride quality is pleasant regardless of whether you’re stuck in rush-hour traffic or speeding down the highway. The two-way charging system can power an entire construction site, and it comes with many other convenient high-tech features, including BlueCruise hands-free driving assist (or even a house during an outage). To sum up, the Lightning is a more eco-friendly version of the conventional Ford F-150 that retains all of that truck’s greatness.

Despite being built on a different chassis than the normal gas-powered F-150, the Lightning is physically similar to the F-150’s Crew Cab. Unlike the forthcoming Chevrolet Silverado 1500 EV, the Lightning’s cab and 5.5-foot bed are shared with the standard F-150. But there are a few noticeable changes, like new wheels, a closed-off grille, and different lights.

Variations in these aesthetics are made between trim levels, with the entry-level Pro looking most like a standard F-150. The XLT trim level comes standard with a front light bar, while the Lariat adds a horizontal light bar to the back. A practical plastic grille is installed without any flashy light bar. Buyers can choose from eleven different paint colors, including Agate Black Metallic, Antimatter Blue Metallic, Atlas Blue Metallic, Carbonized Gray Metallic, Iced Blue Silver, Iconic Silver Metallic, Oxford White, Rapid Red Metallic Tinted, Smoked Quartz Metallic, Star White Metallic, and Stone Grey Metallic.

All F-150 models, including the base Lightning Pro and XLT, come standard with macho 18-inch alloy wheels, and the XLT may be outfitted with the same 20-inch Dark Carbonized Grey wheels that come standard on the Lariat. The only trim that comes standard with dazzling 22-inch wheels is the Platinum trim level. All Lightning models have a cool American flag and lightning bolt logo on the tailgate, and the bed is badged with blue “Lightning” badging. We applaud Ford for designing the Lightning to look familiar instead of coming up with a whole new style for it. We think Ford made a good decision by sticking to what truck buyers are used to.

Interior

The inside of the Ford F-150 EV Lightning 2024 is nearly identical to that of the gasoline-powered F-150, except for a larger touchscreen display and a larger front trunk. Currently, Ford only provides crew-cab F-150 Lightning with 5.5-foot beds. Most consumers will likely prefer the large four-door cabin, but Ford may eventually offer regular (two-door) and Supercab (rear half-door) options. The F-150 Lightning has a big front trunk that can hold up to 400 pounds of cargo. It does this using the space the truck’s engine usually takes up in the standard F-150.

The base model comes with Ford’s newest Sync 4 software running on a 12.0-inch touchscreen; the Lariat and Platinum trims upgrade to 15.0-inch screens. The vehicle comes standard with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, built-in GPS, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. Ford is working with Bang & Olufsen to make two optional premium sound systems, one with eight speakers for the Lariat trim and one with 18 speakers for the Platinum trim.

Engine

Both electric motors and all-wheel drive are standard on all F-150 Lightning variants. The combined output of the engines is 452 hp with the Standard-Range battery and 580 horsepower with the Extended-Range battery, with a peak torque of 775 lb-ft in both cases. For a truck of its weight, the performance is surprisingly swift. We timed the Lightning Platinum at 4.0 to 60 mph and 12.7 seconds to traverse a quarter mile at 107 mph. We were not only impressed by the Lightning’s lightning-fast acceleration but also by the fact that it retained the conventional F-150’s opulent road characteristics. The Lightning’s center of gravity is lower than the Camaro’s. This helps the Lightning handle better by reducing body roll.

Ford designed the F-150 Lightning to double as a generator in the case of a blackout and claims that a wholly charged truck can provide enough power for an ordinary home for three days. Ford estimates a 230-mile range for the base 98.0-kWh battery and a 320-mile range for the bigger 131.0-kWh pack. In our highway-speed range test, conducted at 75 mph, the Lightning Platinum achieved 230 miles of range. Buyers can charge their F-150 Lightning at home using either a 110- or 220-volt plug, and the truck can also be juiced at public DC fast-charging stations, where Ford claims it can go from 15 percent to 80 percent battery capacity in 44 minutes.

The EPA has given the F-150 Lightning Extended-Range a rating of up to 78 MPGe in the city and 64 MPGe on the highway; the Standard-Range vehicles are slightly less efficient, with ratings of 76 MPGe in the city and 61 MPGe on the road. We only managed 54 MPGEs while testing the Lightning Platinum. Check out the EPA’s website to learn more about the F-150 Lightning’s gas mileage.
