Their choice is two hybrid versions of the third-generation Ford Fusion—one regular and one plug-in—despite the automaker’s decision to phase out sedan production in the US in favor of crossovers. This piece focuses on the former because it offers fewer concessions and is the more practical mixed-use partner. The Fusion Hybrid gets its 188 horsepower from its 2.0-liter EcoBoost gasoline four-cylinder engine and electric motor. Only the SEL and higher trims have the signature LED headlights and illumination, but all boundaries have LED taillights. The only differences between the gas and hybrid Fusions are their height and curb weight. Without the mirrors, there is no difference in size between the two models: 191.8 inches in length and 72.9 inches in width. Despite sharing a battery pack with the plug-in hybrid Fusion (PHEV), the HEV’s trunk is significantly smaller at 12 cubic feet compared to the gasoline Fusion’s 16 cubic feet. The hybrid standard is a continuously variable automatic transmission that sends the entire output to the front wheels. It takes nine seconds to accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour, which is about average for the class but slower than the Toyota Camry’s 7.5-second time. The hybrid needs a lot of pressure on the accelerator pedal to get going, whether starting or trying to pass at high speed.
